FreeTheWord – live literary events

FreeThe Word is PEN International's live literary event series, taking place in our centres all around the world, as well as at festivals, book fairs, and performance venues. Our special Make Space FreeTheWord events will happen throughout the year all across the globe. Look out for updates on the Make Space blog and our social media for updates.

The inaugral Make Space event will take place on June 1 in Lillehammer, Norway, at the joint ICORN/PEN International network meeting.

At this live public panel discussion, Zimbabwean writer Grace Mutandwa will be  in conversation with Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, one of Africa’s greatest writers. The conversation will explore Ngũgĩ's journey into exile and the way that language, identity and displacement have influenced and shaped his creativity. Together, these brilliant writers will discuss what cultural elements are needed in order to make space in our communities for the voices and stories of writers living the reality of asylum, exile, or forced migration.
